Into the Blue
There’s something about an octopus that feels almost human - curious, intelligent, and quietly mysterious. Since Remarkably Bright Creatures introduced so many viewers to the soulful charm of these underwater beings, our fascination with octopuses has only deepened. Into the Blue is a celebration of that connection: a luminous, large-scale original painting that brings wonder, movement, and emotion into your home.
This 40x40 inch artwork is built with heavy, layered texture that gives the piece a sculptural presence. Thick brushwork and rich oil layers create depth you can almost feel, while the glowing whites and soft pinks of the octopus seem to emerge from the deep cobalt sea. The sweeping tentacles curl and dance across the canvas, creating a sense of motion and personality that changes with the light throughout the day.
More than just coastal décor, this painting invites you into a story. It captures the octopus as both creature and character with intelligence, grace, and quietly resilience. The textured surface, moody blues, and luminous highlights make it a striking statement piece for a living room, study, coastal retreat, or collector’s wall.

This underwater series came about as Sophie was experimenting with solvent reactions and oil paints. The piece was created on a refurbished canvas, from an abstract landscape with textured plaster ranges. It added more dimension to the ocean floor background.
*This painting includes my signature hidden butterfly - a quiet detail found in my newer oil works. Each butterfly is unique and placed with intention, becoming part of the landscape itself.
